History: Going into the 2011/12 season, Milan were the defending Serie A champions, and were aiming for a second straight title. The Rossoneri kicked off the season with the Supercoppa Italiana (Italian Super Cup) win against their San Siro roommate & Coppa Italia winners, Inter Milan. Their Serie A season was supposed to begin on 27 August, however, a players' strike delayed the first gameweek to 9th September. Milan started the season slow but was able to build a four point lead over Juventus by March. Only a late season falter in the last nine league games of the season with Milan picking up five wins, two draws and two losses bettered by Juventus' ten wins with one draw in the final eleven games to lose the Scudetto by four points. The 2011/12 season marked the end of Milan's aging core as the likes of Filippo Inzaghi, Massimo Oddo retired, while Alessandro Nesta, Gianluca Zambrotta, Mark van Bommel, Clarence Seedorf & Gennaro Gattuso left on a free for lesser intensity levels of football. The vacuum in experience and seasoned playing personnel who have upkept the club's standards and expectation saw Milan's descend into the banter year decade.
