History: Bolton's sixth place finish the previous season saw the Trotters participated in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, the club's first ever European excursion as Sam Allardyce's Bolton Galacticos continued to punch above its weight in domestic & continental football, reaching the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup with the who's who(s) of world football at the time. The 05/06 squad boasted the likes of Champions League winner with Real Madrid in Ivan Campo, Leeds & Newcastle United legend in Gary Speed, Senegal's 2002 World Cup standouts, Khalilou Fadiga & El Hadji Diouf, Mexico's greatest striker in the noughties, Jared Borgetti. With Asia's first footballing superstar in Hidetoshi Nakata playing in what became his final professional season & club captain, "so good they named him twice", Jay-Jay Okocha who was also in his final season at the club. The mercurial Okocha's initial signing with Bolton in 2002 surprised many as he left a PSG that had sporadic seasons challenging for the Ligue 1 title. His second season almost brought success to the Manchester club as Bolton reached the final of 2004 Carling Cup in a losing effort to fellow surprise finalist Middlesbrough 2-1. The club's fortune changed after the 06/07 with the club unable to retain their long time manager while slowly losing their aging galacticos as the size & resources proved to huge to close the gap at the top. But the Bolton of the early 2000s are still fondly remembered in Barclays era nostalgia.
