When Jose Mourinho first signed Claude Makélélé, it was a move that revolutionised the role of the defensive midfielder in the Premier League. Dubbed "the Makélélé role", when the search for a new midfield dynamo that is capable of replicating the role and eventually replace the aging midfield anchor, Chelsea stole a march on Manchester United, who were trying to replace a departed Roy Keane, to sign Michael Essien from Olympique Lyon.
