History: The 2004 UEFA European Championship saw Umbro produced one of the finest England kit of the modern era. Memorable for the red stripe running from sleeve to sleeve that looked like the St. George's flag. With a centralised FA crest, this was also the first England kit to feature the gold star on the left sleeve that represent the single World Cup victory before featuring prominently above the FA crest for future kits. It was also uniquely designed to be a reversible jersey.
The Three Lions qualified out of group B in second behind France with wins over Switzerland & Croatia. The quarterfinal against tournament host, Portugal compounded England's poor penalty shootout win rate in crucial knockout since 1990, winning once against Spain in Euro '96. The aftermath of the 2004 tournament would mark the end of Paul Scholes' England career as the Manchester United man would retire from international duties due then manager, the late Sven-Göran Eriksson, preferring the midfield pairring of Steven Gerrard & Frank Lampard, often shunting the playmaker to the left wing. The 2004 Euro also highlighted England's lack of quality in depth beyond the 'Golden Generation', a squad of individual talents divided into factions, WAG culture and an overreliance on a teenage Wayne Rooney until his injury.
