History: Inter Milan began the 2002/03 season with Ronaldo Nazario leaving for Real Madrid with Hernán Crespo partnering Christian Vieri upfront. The Nerazurris continued to spend big after the 40 million euros for Crespo with future Ballon d'Or winning defender Fabio Cannavaro & Matias Almeyda arriving from Parma, Francesco Coco from across the San Siro dressing room with Clarence Seedorf moving the opposite direction. The strengthening in Inter's playing squad did not yield any trophy return for head coach, Héctor Cúper, as they finished seven points off Juventus in second place and agonising closed to making the first all Italian Champions League final, losing on penalty shootout in the Derby della Madonnina against their Milan rival.
Christian Vieri would finish the 2002/03 season as Serie A top scorer with 24 goals. Vieri first flourished under Héctor Cúper with 22 goals in 25 games in the 2001/02 season, only a dip in form during the 2003/04 season which was coincided by Cúper's departure as head coach. Nicknamed "Il Toro", Vieri's goalscoring ability was often hampered by injuries throughout his career. He was fondly remembered by fans as one of the greatest Italian strikers of his generation, amongst others from the 90s of Italian football. An old fashioned striker who was capable of scoring with both feet and strong with his head, an art form that is lost in today's team-based tactical approach.
