History: Leeds United placed high hopes for the 2000/01 season with big money signings in the transfer market with arrivals of Olivier Dacourt (£7.2m from RC Lens), Mark Viduka (£6.5m from Celtic), Dominic Matteo (£4.75m from Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand (£18m from West Ham) & Robbie Keane (£12m from Inter) in preparations for Champions League football.
After a spectacular run to the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League but narrowly missed out on qualifiying for Europe's top competition for a second season running by a single point in fourth, the Yorkshire side followed up with two more signings with Seth Johnson arriving from Derby County for £9 million & Robbie Fowler for £11 million from Liverpool in 2001/02. The heavy investment in the playing squad soon turned towards financial ruin as a disastrous 5th place finish and rising annual debt from £9m to £119m resulted in dismantling the Leeds' expensively assembled squad to sustain debt repayments. The 2002/03 transfer market saw the club forced to sell Rio Ferdinand to rivals Manchester United, Robbie Keane left for Tottenham Hotspur, Robbie Fowler to Manchester City. Prominent youth academy graduate, Jonathan Woodgate was sold to Newcastle United resulting in a 15th placed finish.
'Doing a Leeds' became synonomous when relegation was confirmed on the final day of 2003/04 as more outgoing of first team players saw Yorkshire club that was 'too good to go down' entered administration and a financial driven collapse down the English football pyramid in the following one and a half decade.
Harry Kewell, who was signed by Leeds as a teenager from Australia in 1996 and made 181 league appearances, would leave for Liverpool in the summer of 2003 after rejecting a host of clubs to join the club he supported as a boy. Kewell would become the f Australian-born footballer to win the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in 2005.
