History: After Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford at the end of 2008/09, United looked to spread the goalscoring threat amongst three players signed to replace the goal output. The arrival of Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and a punt of virtually unknown French winger Gabriel Obertan failed to replicate the goals. However, in the two seasons, the Portuguese winger signed from the same club as CR7 in the summer of 2007 viewed by United fans as nothing more than a sidekick to Ronaldo's greatness stepped up in a way that he was unfortunate to be excluded in the running for player of the season between 2009 - 2012. To the football purist, Nani was viewed as a complete footballer comparable to or better than his Portuguese brethren.
