History: The UEFA Euros 2000 was the first time the tournament was hosted by more thatn one nation with Belgium and Netherlands co-hosting. Netherlands went into the tournament as one of the favourites with a generational group of world class players from the mid-90s and homeground support behind them which the team showed, topping Group D with a hundred percent record and even beating eventual winners, France, in the final group match.

The Oranje followed up with a convincing 6-1 trouncing of FR Yugoslavia in the quarterfinals before missing out on the final with an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Italy after a nil-nil draw. Throughout Netherlands' run to the semifinal, Dennis Bergkamp was everpresent in the lineup, being one of three experienced head with over 70 caps started every single game of the tournament. Despite failing to find the net, his technical ability helped the Patrick Kluivert top the goalscoring chart. The 2000 European Championship was also Bergkamp's last international competition as the then 31-year old forward would retire from international duty to focus on prolonging his club career, eventually retiring from professional football in 2006.
