History: The 2001-03 period was Newcastle United's finest under Sir Bobby Robson as the well respected manager archieved back to back Champions League qualification in the two seasons, finishing 4th & 3rd respectively. The 2002/03 season saw the Magpies going one better and in the shout for the Premier League title, keeping up with the likes of Arsenal & Manchester United in a three-horse race until the end of March.
Only the two defeats to Everton & Manchester United killed off the title hopes. An Alan Shearer led side scrapped through the UEFA Champions League first group stage with a shock 1-0 win over Juventus and took an injury time winner from Craig Bellamy against Feyenoord to secure passage to the second group stage phase 'group of death', with Inter Milan, Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen. Defeat to Barcelona in the final group game saw Newcastle crash out of the premier continental competition, being the last time the Magpies feature in the competition proper until twenty years later.
