History: The 2004/05 season was a turbulent one for Newcastle United. The season started badly for the Magpies as they began the first four games without a win that saw popular manager, Sir Bobby Robson dismissed as a result. One of the factor of a split between Robson & chairman, Freddy Shepherd was the high profile signings, in particular, Patrick Kluivert, without the manager's consultation. Graeme Souness was brought in from Blackburn Rovers to steady the ship and appease the St James' Park faithful.
Souness' appointment let a mid-season upturn in the continental & cup competitions. Only a dip in form saw them finished 14th in the league despite reaching the quarterfinals & semifinals of the UEFA Cup & FA Cup respectively.
2005 also saw a release of the football film, 'Goal!: Dream Begins' that told the rags-to-riches story of a young Mexican amateur footballer, Santiago Muñez, living illegally in Los Angeles, California who was scouted by a former Newcastle United player while playing for his local side. The movie prominently featured Newcastle United & its players as the boy was soon signed by the club and went on to achieve great success in his professional career, scoring the storyline winning free kick in the dying moments against Liverpool that earned the club a spot in the Champions League.
