History: The ultimate failure of Florentino Perez's first Los Galacticos era came to head in the trophyless 2004/05 season, a first since 1995/96 after the initial success of the star studded squad building formula of bringing in Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane & Ronaldo at the turn of the millenium, winning two La Liga titles & the 2002 UEFA Champions League.
However, the shock sacking of Vicente del Bosque after the Champions League win with poor coaching replacement, combined with selling of crucial defensive piece in the form of Claude Makélélé, who was sold after the signing of David Beckham based on commercial value reasons in 2003, resulted in an imbalanced squad with disastrous signings in Jonathan Woodgate & Thomas Gravesen who both underperformed contributing to the merry-go-round of managerial appointment throughout the 2004/05 season. Los Blancos would still finish the season in 2nd, an improvement from the fourth place finish in 03/04, only four points off a resurgent FC Barcelona spearheaded by a brilliant Ronaldinho. Real's trophyless spell would extend for a second season with another round of mid-season managerial changes before the appointment of Fabio Capello to arrest the slide, that period would also usher in the second Galacticos era for the Santiago Bernabéu faithful.
